Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen plus Steve Hill Centennial Square July 2, 2016 at 7:30pm
One of the most revered of the New Orleans “piano professors,” Jon Cleary was actually born in England. He was, however, lucky enough to grow up in New Orleans, and for over three decades has been one of the Crescent City’s most charismatic musical artists. A piano master with a soulful voice, Cleary has a knack for composing infectious grooves with melodic hooks. Oh, and he’s a pretty sharp lyricist too. His most recent release GoGo Juice won the 2016 Grammy for “Best Regional Roots Music Album.” Cleary has appeared solo at previous JazzFests, but this time around he’s playing with his long time band, The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, a larger-than-life trio of very funky New Orleans natives who expand Cleary’s rich and rollicking sound into the realm of urban blues, R&B, and soul. These riotously musical Gentlemen include Derwin “Big D” Perkins guitar, Cornell Williams bass, and A.J. Hall drums.
